MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS FIRST MEETING HELD PAEROA BOROUGH COUNCIL ___ * The first meeting of the new elected Paeroa Borough -Council was held in the council chambers last night,, when the mayor and councillors were duly sworn in. Mr M. C. Baker, town clerk, invested the new mayor, Mr N. C. Davies, with the insignia of his office. Mr Davies said that he was proud of the high honour which had' been, conferred upon him. He felt humble ' and hoped that the feeling of humility would not leave him. Paeroa had a future and he hoped that he and the councillors would be able to feel proud that they had contributed some share in the making of that progress. The investiture of the mayor was followed "by a declaration of the poll and the swearing in of each councillor and the mayor.

A very hearty welcome was extended to allcouncillors by the mayor, who expressed the hope that the work of the council would 'be profitable. Cr C. O’Brien congratulated l the mayor and gave his assurance that his whole aim would be to promote the interest of the town.

Cr E. W. Lee congratulated the new mayor and offered his full support and co-operation.. Ci- G. E. Button endorsed the marks of Cr Lee and explained that with him the needs of the citizens would have preference over his own interests.

Cr J. H. Walmsley, as the oldest councillor, -stated that he * had not supported Mr Davies at the mayoral election but he would support him s<> long as be thought proposals were in the interests of the people of Paeroa. If he did not approve of the mayor’s actions at any time .he would say so in council meetings ajid not outside the meetings.

Crs C. Dent, W. Crimmins, ‘J. H. Bartlett and R. J. Hughes also offered their willing support and expressed confidence that the council would work, in harmony.

Deputy Mayor For the office of deputy mayor, the? mayor, Mr Davies, nominated Cr IL W. Lee. . . The commqn practise, said CrcWalmsley, was that the coufncilkxr with the highest number of votes automatically became deputy-mayor. - & He was prepared to nominate Cr Dent as he had headed the poll.
