DEPLORABLE STATE
OPOUTERE-HIKUAI ROAD
'COMPLAINT MADE TO COUNCIL
“Deplorable” was the term used by the sole teacher of the Opoutere school and school bus driver, Mr C. R. Carnachan, when complaining to the October meeting of the Thames County Council about the state of the Opoutere road near Hikuai. These three and a half miles of road were bounded by forest land and the rates available to the county from properties fronting it were only £lO a year. The New Zealand State Forest Service had made a grant of £4O this year, but there was no indication that it would be a permanent contribution. Faced with such difficulties the council found it hard to maintain the road as desired, but on account of Mr Carnachan’s appeal, decided at its last meeting that the matter should be left in the hands of the riding member, Cr J. R. McCall, with power to act. Cr M|eCall thought the road could be considerably improved by grading. There were now eight permanent residents on the three-mile section of the Opoutere road, besides seven summer cottages
