WAIHI HOSPITAL

PLANS CONSIDERED EXTENSIVE SCHEME OFFICIAL RECOMMENDATION Sketch plans and estimates as to the cost of proposed alterations at the Waihi hospital have been forwarded to the Thames Hospital Board by its architect and were discussed at the October meeting of the Thames Hospital Board.

* The chairman of the board, Mr J. W. Danby, recalled that the late Mr A. L. Neighbour, together with the board’s architect had made a thorough inspection of what was required at Waihi hospital and their proposals and a sketch plan had been taken to Wellington and given to the department. The departmental officials had made many alterations and additions to the proposals put forward by the board and there was now presented to the board what had been recommended by the department the cost of the alterations and additions being far above that embodied in the board’s original suggestions. The departmental officials were, 'however, experts and qualified to state what was needed at Waihi or any other hospital and it would not be for the board, in his opinion, to challenge the ideas of departmental officers in that respect.

The alterations which were recommended to be made at Waihi hospital by the department comprised the erection of a 1 four single bedroom and one double bedroom isolation ward; additions to the maternity annexe to provide for a total of 11 beds - and additions to the nursery; the conversion of an old kitchen into both a maids’ dining room and a store area; subdivision of men’s ward; alteration of old ward and conversion into a new hospital kitchen with cool room, dry store and food preparation room.

The plans presented to the board were in accordance with the suggestions and recommendations of the department and the meeting resolved that they be forwarded to the department for its approval.
