AMENDING ACT

NEW PROVISIONS

The attention of the Gazette has been drawn to the provisions of the new Transport Amendment Act now before the House of Representatives by Mr G. E. Button, secretary of the Thames Valley Carrier’s Association. “This amending bill,” stated Mr Button, “was introduced into Parliament last Thursday. The main points covered by the measure are: — 1. “Rates are to be fixed by the Commissioner of Transport with the additional right of appeal on behalf of operators’ and users’ organisations. Every endeavour must now be made to effect agreement between the parties before the Commission will intervene. 2. “In determining the right of any operator to additional licenses or variation of area covered regard shall be had by the Licensing Authority to ‘the extent to which an improved standard of service in the district is necessary or desirable in the public interest.’ 3. “The term of license is to be extended from three years to five years. 4. “The maximum gross weight for two axled vehicles is to be increased to 12 tons with a maximum axle load of eight tons. The maximum axle load for multi-axled vehicles in respect of axles eight feet or more apart is increased to 7 tons.

“It was hoped by the industry that the new bill would allow for more elasticity than enjoyed at present,” concluded Mr Button.
