TOO MANY APPEALS

LOCAL BODIES WORRIED COMMENT BY COUNCILLORS WORK OF SOCIAL SECURITY The frequency of appeals from worthy organisations to local bodies was comm ented on by some members of the Haumaki Plains County Council at .the October meeting. Discussion arose when the Auckland Orphanages United Council wrote appealing for funds and it was decided to grant the same sum as last year, namely £5. Cr J. F. Mlayn, of Patetonga, said it was not right “that every povertystricken organisation in the country came hat in hand to the council.” He considered it was not right for the' council to give away ratepayers’ money which had been raised as rates. Cr D. G. McMillan, of Kerepehi, . contended that the -Social Security fund should bear the cost of such charitable organisations. He mentioned the large amount collected for Social Security, yet, at every meeting, the council was asked to give money away to support some worthy cause. He criticised the operations of Social Security under the circumstances.
