LABOUR WEEK END

NO ACCOMMODATION OLD BOYS & GIRLS ASSN. VISITORS TO COROMANDEL Ideal weather prevailed at Coromandel for the Labour Day week-end holiday and advantage was taken by the many visitors to get around and see the countryside, which is at its best at this time of the year. The M.V. Coromel brought a number of visitors on Friday night and a bus load came by road on Saturday. Had it not been for lack of accommodation, two more buses would have made the trip and brought more of the old boys and girls for their annual visit to their home town.

About 1.30 p.m. a number of residents on foot and many cars were lined up outside the Post Office where the Coromandel Silver Band played selections to welcome the visitors. Mr Ernest Deeble, county chairman, extended a cordial welcome back to the home town and said how much the visit was looked forward to each year by both the visitors and the local people. He hoped their stay would be pleasant and that many more such visits would eventuate.

In the afternoon the usual football match was played in a very friendly manner (details of which appear in another column. In the evening a dance was held in the R.S.A. hall which was packed and, it being a very mild night, everyone was feeling the heat, but it didn’t damp the energy displayed by the dancers. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs D. Stewart and Mr W. Hart.

During the evening Mr H. V. Denize on behalf of the Coromandel Rugby Union welcomed the old boys and girls to their home town and hoped they would enjoy themselves since the weather was being so kind. He then presented the Coromandel hotel cup to the Coromandel team. It was a pleasure to do that, he said, seeing that it went back to Auckland last year.

Mr Ron Pepper, who received the cup in place of the captain, suitably replied. Mr Arthur Barrett, president of the Coromandel Old Boys and Girls’ Association, thanked the local people for turning out to welcome them and also for coming to the dance in such numbers to help intake the evening a happy reunion. Tn conclusion he said that many were disappointed at not being able to come owing to lack of accommodation at Coromandel and he appealed to those present to see what could be done in that connection for next year.

Dancing continued till midnight.

On Sunday afternoon the band played selections outside the hospital to a small attendance of the public. The patients appreciated the music and no doubt their pleasure offset the lack of interest shown by residents of the town.

The boat and bus left during Monday and at night the annual Catholic social and dance was held and wound up the activities of the holiday weekend, the last before Christmas.
