RUMOUR QUASHED
NO TRANSFER OF FUNDS
PORT RD., WHANGAMATA
COUNTY COUNCIL’S DENIAL
A rumour that a sum of £lOO had been transferred from the funds of the Hastings riding of the Thames county to the funds of the Tairua riding was promptly quashed by tlfe chairman, Mr D. Courtney, at the last meeting of the Thames County Council held recently in Thames. Mr Courtney said that rumours were circulated either from foolishness or cussedness but he thought that the average ratepayer would have sufficient common sense to know that such a transfer of funds would not be tolerated in any well run local body. Apparently, said the chairman, because Cr W. H. B. Colbeck had assisted in the reconstruction of the Port road, Whangamata, in the Tairua riding, people had imagined that financial help was being provided by the Hastings riding. That was not true, said the chairman, who emphasised the fact that there had been no transfer of funds and Cr Colbeck was merely giving the Tairua riding the benefit of his knowledge in road construction.
