WHO CAN VOTE?

RUGBY UNION MEETING WHO ARE MEMBERS? iPAEROA’S ANNUAL MEETING

Who is entitled to vote at the annual meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Football Union was the question raised at the annual meeting of the union held recently. The question was raised by the chairman, Mr W. F. Faber, who pointed out that he was faced with a difficult position. The union was an incorporated society and according to general principles only members of a society would be entitled to vote. The rules of the society were silent in the matter. He thought that the real members were the members of the affiliated clubs and there were many people present who were not members of any affiliated club nor were they elected members of the

management committee of the union. It was certainly a difficult position, said the chairman, who said-that he was quite at loss to know what the correct position was but it was clear that only members of an incorporate society could vote at its annual meeting. If that were not so it would be possible for anyone to attend the meeting and vote. It was pointed out that as the position stood a deadlock had arisen and it would not be possible to proceed with the’ election of officers.

Much discussion followed and finally the suggestion was made that, if by the votes of club members a resolution wag carried that all present be permitted to vote, that might overcome the difficulty. Finally a resolution to that effect was carried and the election of officers proceeded, all present being permitted to vote. It*was also resolved that the incoming committee enquire into the legal position and take the necessary steps to have the position clarified and provision made in the rules to cover the difficulty and make it clear as to what persons were entitled to vote.
