HORACE WOOD CUP

BAND QUARTETTES 20 TEAMS FOR PAEROA SATURDAY’S COMfPETITIONS The quartette competitions for the Honace Wood cup iwiiW be competed for by nine, junior and 11 senior band 'teams in the Civic hall, Paeroa, on Saturday evening next, September 23. In the senior competition there are 11 quartettes taking part, there being three from Thames Citizens Band, one from the Matamata Citizens Band, three from the Te Aroha ■ Citizens Band, one from the Katikati Citizens Band and three quartettes from the Paeroa Municipal Band. In the junior competition the Te Aroha Boys’ Band has entered five quartettes, the Kerepehi Boys’ Band has three entries and the Thames Citizens’ Band, one entry. .About 12 years ago Mr Horace Wood of the Te Aroha Municipal Band presented the cup for competition and each year ever since it has been competed for, the competitions being held where -the eup was held. In order to foster band playing and encourage young players a second cup was later presented by Mir Wood to be competed for ( by juniors. According to the rules governing the competition the cup, to be won outright, must be won three times in succession and it is for the holder of the cup to organise the competition. Last year the Thames Citizens’ Band won the cup outright but very sportingly put the cup back into circulation and suggested that the competitions should this year be held in Paeroa. An orthodox quartette consists of two comets, one tenor horn and one euphonium though quartettes are sometimes made up of other instruments and are eligible to take part in the event. The music is selected by each competitor. Mr A. E. Savage, late conductor of the Waikato Regimental and Hamilton Municipal Band, will be the adjudicator.
