The intervention of the New Zealand Standards Institute in the signwriting trade has caused concern to the Hawera Chamber of Commerce, which is opposed to some of the proposed uniform by-laws regulating signs and hoardings. As one member remarked, the by-laws would overstep the mark, limiting the number of boards on each building, requiring the licensing of each board and its inspection by a borough engineer, and applying time, size and colour limitations. Each municipality through its own by-laws should be able to hold signs and hoardings within commionsense limits. t Further, as the Railways' Department is one of the largest renters of hoarding space it should be possible for the Government to act reasonably without a mass of new controls and restrictions. Actually New Zealand is not so much concerned about signs and hoardings in cities and boroughs as it is with the defacement of views and vistas from the main road's and railways. By his leadership and eloquence Lord Bledisloe as Governor-General induced the Railways Department and the larger proprietary firms to remove hoardings from the rural scene. Today they are springing up at every turn and competition does the rest. Here is urgent scope for the Government and the Standards Institute ; if New Zealand’s countryside could.be relieved of inartistic and “eye-bashing” hoardings, the Dominion would feel that the splendid influence of Lord Bledisloe had not been forgotten.
