MASQUERADE BALL

WAITAKARURU SCHOOL

IN AID OF THE SPORTS QUEEN

A children’s masquerade ball, with fancy dress optional, was held in the Waitakaruru hall recently in the interests of the memorial' carnival’s sports queen. There was a splendid attendance of both parents and children and the variety of fancy costumes testified to the initiative and energy of the mothers who have been kept constantly busy lately working for various carnival functions.

Mr Hinton, the schoolmaster, ably assisted by his staff, kept a programme of children’s events moving along merrily, with Mrs W. Hegh as accompanist for the songs and Mrs Laurie Hill for the dancing items. The following is a resume of the programme:— “God Save the King; heel and toe polka; senior group, choruses, Forty Years On” and “Hark To The Echoes;” seniors, hokey tokey; juniors, hokey tokey; infants, drill game, Indians, singing, Sleeping Princess,” recitations, Mignon Ashford, Kaye Mitchell; log cabin,; recitations (choral) by juniors, “The Milkman” and “Pants That Mother Made;” step dance, Polonaise;, tap dance by Jeanette Roberts; senior group (chorus), “On the Ball,” and “Boney Was a Warrior;” Teddy Bear’s Picnic; standards 3 and 4 (choral), mad march; floral dance by juniors, railway carriage; solo on mouth organ by Barbara Shadbolt; junior group (chorus), “New Moon” and “The Thrush” by Clarice McCollum, Beth Madgwick, Holly Gordon and Eunice McNeil; Irish hornpipe by Jeanette Roberts; musical parcel; tap dance by Barbara Roberts. Mr Hector Grbic was much enjoyed in two solos which he accompanied himself on his guitar and Mr and Mrs W. Hegh gave same of their always popular duets and solos.
