TO BE AXED?

PAEROA GUM TREES SHADING SOME HOUSES COUNCIL TO DECIDE FATE “Would it be possible to have the gum trees ait the back of the Army office in Paeroa, cut down or topped?” wrote four ratepayers to the August meteting of the Paeroa Borough Council. The ratepayers stated that their properties as a result of the existence of the trees did not get the sun till after 10 o’clock and if the trees were .removed they would get the sun by 9 a.m.

It was further pointed out that the school grounds would also benefit if the trees were removed.

Mr Edwin Edwards, mayor, informed councillors that the trees did shade the houses though they *were a long way away from the houses in question.. On the other hand the trees provided shade for the school children in the summer time.

The deputy-mayor, Cr J- H. Walmsley, pointed out that the trees had been topped on a previous occasion. Some of the trees were 60 feet high, said the mayor. They were valuable and he thought the works committee should inspect the locality. He favoured cutting down near the ground level and selling the timber to mutilating the trees by topping. It was near the end of the winter now and if they could be spared for a short time they could no doubt be sold. Cr C. O’Brien moved that the area be inspected and a report be made to the council as to whether the trees should be cut down and the committee be given power to act A resolution to that’effect was accordingly carried. «
