COUNTY VOTERS EXCLUDED
DELEGATES WERE CONFUSED
Due to a remit passed at the recent conference of the N.Z. Counties’ Association in Auckland,legislation may , eventually... -,b© - passed which will not allow county (ratepayers affected iby a borough, councils proposal to inchide part of the county in its area, to vote ion the issue. Borough ratepayers alone will have this prerogative. The chairman of the Thames County Council, Mr D. Courtney, who attended the conference, told his council that he was astounded that delegates should make a decision which Was not in favour of county ratepayers being given a vote on a proposal affecting their welfare.
They could not advance a valid) argument, although one delegate had said the county ratepayers did not have brains enough to vote anyway! ' Or E. G. dark, who also attended the conference, said in his opinioin the decisioln w*ouiid not have been made had delegates not been conf used.
The eouncil may decide to send a remit to the 1951 conference in an endeavour to alter the decision.
