Totalisator Exceeds £100,000

PAEROA RACES

LARGE CROWD ATTENDS VERY SUCCESSFUL DAY / DOUBLE PAYOUT AGAIN BIG With a totalisator turnover of £100,642/10/- and what was thought to be one of the largest crowds ever seen on the. Paeroa racecourse, the Ohinemun Jockey Club’s winter meeting held on Saturday was an outstanding success —more successful than even the most sanguine had expected. The date was secured when the Greymouth Jockey Club had to abandon its meeting following floods and some of the profits of the meeting are to be donated to the Paeroa District War Memorial FundThe turnover on the doubles totalisator was £11,041 and on the wiji and place machine £98,691/10/-, making a grand total of £100,642/10/s the second time only that the chib has enjoyed a turnover exceeding £lOO,OOO. At the December meeting the turnover was £102,258/10/-, the doubles totalisator. putting through £5980 and the win and place machine £96,278. The club did not hold a winter meeting last year, but at the spring meeting in September, 1949, £60,793/10/- was put through the totalisator, the increase compared with that meeting on Saturday being £39,849. The weather was perfect, there being bright sunshine following frost, and the picturesque setting of the ■Paeroa course which was emphasised by the fine day added no little to the enjoyment of patrons. : The course and track were in splendid order. Although the fourth and final test between the touring British Isles Rugby team and New Zealand was played at Eden park on Saturday and' was expected to effect the attendance the support acorded the meeting was much in excess of that estimated by the committee 7 and facilities were taxed to handle the record crowd which was present. However, although there was-a big programme, ten races in all, for a short winter’s day the meeting was handled in the usual efficient manner for which the Ohinemuri Jockey Club is becoming well-known.

Once again the eM> enjoyed a big pay-out for the double, the return being £764/16/- for £l. The well fancied Te Paerata won the first leg of the double, the President’s Handicap, and public fancy was that Te Tui, Te Paerata’s stablemate would take the Steward’s Handicap, the second race of the double. However this was not to be, .one of the outsiders of the field, Gay Sari, getting the decision by half-a-neck from Driving Creek with Te Tui a neck further back, third. The tWo jumping events provided interesting spectacles, although The Bat, the second favourite each way, ran away from the field in the July Hurdle Race Handicap to win comfortably 'by 20 lengths. The Winter Steeples Handicap was won by The Trader who returned supporters the dividend of £l6/10/- to win. Actually the biggest dividend of the day was that of the winner of the Stewards’ Handicap, Gay Sari investors to win receiving £26/-/6 for their £l.
