GAME ENDS IN A DRAW
COROMANDEL HOLDS TROPHY
In a drawn game on the Coromandel domain on Saturday last the Coromandel Rugby football team managed to retain the Kidd cup when it defended the trophy against a challenge from the Tairua-Hikuai fifteen. The game opened with Tairua appearing to have the better of the play but within 16 minutes Coromandel launched an attack, K. Notman from the ruck taking the ball through for M. Gamble to score, the try being unconverted.
Play was at a fast pace up and down the field with Coromandel having the better in the loose, Tairua replying with a fast movement in which the forwards, with ball at toe led by Laycock, swept play to the Coromandel goal for P. Beach to score, the try being unconverted and making the score three all.
The Coromandel skipper, Davis, worked hard keeping the play open and took the ball Ao Tairua twentyfive when Neil Strongman secured and crossed the line, D. Beech converting, the score at half-time being Coromandel 2, Tairua-Hikuai 3. A further try for Coromandel was secured by D. Just before the call of time Tairua again scored, D. Laycock securing a try which was converted evening the score at 11 all.
Tairua backs handled better and excelled in the light but loope play was to Coromandel’s liking and in that respect Coromandel was superior. Among Tairua players Pattie, Goodhue, Laycock, T. Beach and CoryWright showed to advantage. For Coromandel J. Beech, R.. Pepper and D r Beech played good football, M. Gamble and H. Dick being always prominent Mr V. Rout was referee.
COMBINED TEAM WINS
WAIUKU (PLAYERS DEFEATED
On the Coromandel domain on Saturday last a combined Kennedy Bay and Rugby football team met and defeated a Waiuku team by a margin of 15 points to nil.
All of the combined team’s points came from tries and a feature of the game was the poor kicking, no less than 10 penalty kicks jn reasonably handy positions, being missed as well as conversions. Had the combined team had someone to goal kick the score might haye been a cricket score.
Some fine dash was shown by the outside backs of the combined team and by the Waiuku forwards who won most of the scrums, particularly during the setond half. The game was by no means one-sided but the luck of the day was with the combined team. Mr M. Rivers was referee.
