FIRE CONTROL
PROPOSED REGULATIONS CRITICAL COMMENT SOUGHT Comments on the proposed Forest and Rural Fires Regulations have ■been requested from local bodies and became the subject of discussion at the February meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council. The director of Forestry, New Zealand Forest Service, asked for a critical examination of the provisions of the proposed regulations, a copy of which wag forwarded for perusal. Written comments and suggestions were solicited. It was pointed out that State forest land was not covered by the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1947, unless included in a rural fire district and to avoid the necessity and inconvenience of two sets of regulations it was proposed to issue the Forest and Rural Fires Regulations under the authority of both the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1947, and the Forests Act, 1949, as similar provision was made in both cases and it was desirable that there should be no conflict.
“The regulations seem to pay close attention to sawmililng operations,” said one member. It was decided to circulate the regulations amongst councillors and bring the matter up for discussion at next meeting of the council.
