TRUST HOTELS
LOCAL BODY CAN APPLY POLL CAN BE TAKEN Where the granting of a license within a locality or area has been authorised by the Licensing Control Commission any local authority may apply for the grant of a license to be conducted by a local trust to be formed to conduct the premises. This information was contained in the report of the acting county clerk, Mr L. E. Smith, to the February mooting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. Local bodies are granted the gbove right by virtue of the Local Licensing Trusts Regulations which came into force on December 22, 1949. The regulations also provide that for the purpose of ascertaining whether the electors of the area, defined by the Licensing Control Commission as being that in which the license is proposed to be granted, desire that the licensed premises be conducted by a local trust, the local authority having jurisdiction in that area may apply to the Licensing Control Commission to authorise the taking of a poll. The commission may define the area within which the poll is to be taken, appoint the returning officer, fix the dates for the closing of the rolls and the taking of the poll and direct how the costs shall be borne, etc. The application would have to be made within 60 days after the last publication of the* notice by the licensing committee of its intention to consider applications for the license. After a short discussion when the question of the coot of building a hotel was considered councillors expressed the opinion that a hotel at Ngatea was a matter for private enterprise.
