"H.M.S. COROMANDEL”
NAMING OF WARSHIP MINISTER SYMPATHETIC More warships would be needed in New Zealand, said the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, and there was no reason why one should not be named after Coromandel in view of its historic record. The Minister was replying to a request made to him by Mr E. Deeble, chairman of the Coromandel County Council, and the county clerk, Mr J. H. Lucas, when those gentlemen interviewed the Minister recently in Wellington. Mr Deeble pointed out to the Minister that Coromandel had historical associations with the navy and he requested the Minister to consider at a future time the naming of a warship the H.M.S. Coromandel.” Mr Jones requested Mr Deeble to have the history written and sent to him in the form of a letter record purposes.
