WAR MEMORIAL
WREATHS FROM KAIAUA UNVEILING CEREMONY The unveiling of the memorial chaplet to the district’s war dead was performed by His Excellency the Governor-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., when he and Lady Freybery were received at Pukekohe on April 12. Mrs Whittleson of Miranda, on behalf of the Paoa and Whanuanga tribal Maoris, placed a wreath at the foot of the memorial. Another wreath was placed by Mrs Waata of Kaiaua. Others who attended this impressive ceremony were Mr G. H. Lowry of Kaiaua, vice-president of the Pokeno-Mercer branch of the R.S.A.; Mr Whittleson, Mr Tom Peny of Miranda, Mr Frank Herbet of Mangatangi, Mr W. Waata, of Kaiaua.
NOT NOTIFIED BRANCH OF R.S.A. In telephone corfM(N«tion with a Gazette correspondent Mr G. H. Lowry, vice-president of the PokenoMercer branch of the R.S.A., said that neither he nor Mr Middleton, president of the branch, were notified of the above unveiling of the memorial for the soldiers of the first and second world wars. The members of this association were somewhat mystified as to the attitude of those who were responsible for the ceremony, and it seemed that someone had slipped up on the job badly.
