SEASON OPENS
GOLF AT THE BAY. GREENS IN GOOD ORDER The opening day of the Mercury Bay Golf Club was held recently under ideal conditions. Mr Trevor Brett, the president, in his opening address stated that everything indicated a successful season for the club. After the season had been declared open, a Canadian foursomes tournament was contested by 44 players, for trophies donated by the president. The winners were Mr and Mrs Wylde, of Wanganui, with a card of 44. The next best cards were returned by Miss L. White and Mr C. Simpson, Mr V. Comer and Mrs Howard, Mrs C. Smith and Mr IL S. Otter, with cards of 46. A “ blind ’ competition, based on the tournament resulted in Dr. Feltham and Mr RWhitten tying. Mrs Smith and Mr Otter won the “hidden hole,” on a count back, from Mrs Howard and Mr Comer. During the day an appetising luncheon and afternoon tea were served by the ladies’ committee. Many favourable comments were made on the excellent condition of the greens and fairways which had been prepared by Messrs Hughes, Fussey, Simpson, T-roughear, Jackman, Brett and Otter. Officers of the club are—Patron, Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P.; president, Mr T. Brett; vice-presidents, Mr L. R. Dale, Dr. W. JJ. Feltham, Dr. Mackareth and Mr H. S. Beynon; secretary, Mr R. S. Otter; club captain, Miss Anne Robinson and Mr R. C. Sewell, jnr.; committee, Mesdames C. Smith,’ I. Howard, C. Peachey, P. Foster, Miss L. White, Messrs Whitten, Jackman and Fussey. A dance was held in the evening; music was supplied by the Bruce Brothers, and Messrs R- C. Sewell and R. S. Otter were M’s.C.
