HOME AND COUNTRY

COROMANDEL INSTITUTE MOST ENJOYABLE EVENING A most enjoyable evening was spent at the monthly meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute, held in the Oddfellows’ hall recently, when Mrs H. Ball presided.

Mrs E. Turner was elected as a delegate to the council meeting in Thames in place of Mrs C. Anderson, who was unable to attend. The delegate was instructed to vote in favour of the federation emergency remit, deploring the Government’s action in the taking of old established farms to be cut up for rehabilitation purposes.

A letter was received from the town clerk, Thames, in reference to organising an appeal in Coromandel for the Cancer Campaign. After a discussion it was decided to call a meeting of the heads of organisations with a view to arranging a house-to-house collection. The matter was left in the hands of the president and secretary to arrange.

An appeal was received from the committee of the Coromandel Scout Troop to assist in cash, kind or suggestions for the new Scout hut. The letter received very sympathetic consideration and it was finally decided to hold a “pound evening” at the next meeting, Mrs E. Turner to act as auctioneer.

Thanks for assisting at the hospital garden party were received from the matron, Miss M. Langie.

The roll call, “ The Beautiful Things of Life,” was well answered and varied from flowers to trees, sunsets, moonlight on the water, a baby’s smile, a log fire and colours. The president presented Mrs W. Dear with the points prize won last year, Mrs McKinley receiving second prize and Mrs Inglis third prize. Miss Russell was appointed in charge of the parcels for Britain effort of the institute.

A delightful supper was served by the hostesses, Mrs Ariell and Miss Barrett. The meeting closed with the singing of the national anthem. Results of competitions: Tray cloth, Miss N. Barrett 1, Mrs N. James 2, Miss G. Russell 3; bran biscuits, Mrs Deeble only entry; kumaras, Miss Barrett only entry; best bloom, Mrs Ariell 1 and 2, Mrs Reddy 3.
