PUBLIC TELEPHONE
WOULD SERVE 70 HOUSES RAILWAY SETTLEMENT NEED A public telephone booth and letter box, to be established at a suitable place in the Paeroa railway settlement, are to be applied for by the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce. It was thought by members at the meeting of the chamber on Tuesday night that a position in Porritt street would be most central. By the time the 40 new State houses were completed in this settlement it was esetimated that there would be approximately 70 houses there, the majority of which were without telephones as these were only permitted in State houses under special circumstances, stated the chairman, Mr E. W. Lee. In fact, he did not know of any telephone at the settlement which could be used in cases of emergency such as sickness or fire. He moved that the application be made and Mr E. Ward seconded the motion which was carried.
