SUBSIDY WANTED

WAITAWHETA HALL REQUEST DEPUTATION TO MINISTER Proposals for the alteration and addition to the Waitawheta hall to provide a community centre for that district, were outlined by a deputation of settlers from Waitawheta, when they waited upon the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, during his visit to Paeroa on Monday. The chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, Mr T. A. Barrett, stated that there were some 120 people living in the Waitawheta district and they hoped, with the aid of a subsidy from the Government, to develop a community centre by enlarging the present hall. The Ohinemuri County Council was wholeheartedly behind the people of Waitawheta and supported the request.

The county clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, gave full details of the proposal and a'dy presented the case for the people of Waitawheta. The Minister commended the proposal, pointing out that the only condition which his department imposed was that any such scheme must be under the complete control of the county council. The Government, he said, would not advance money for a community centre which would serve as a war memorial for the district without it was controlled by a local body who would see that it was not neglected in future years.
