SUCCESSFUL DAY

PICNIC RACE MEETING

HELP PAEROA AMBULANCE

WHALE’S VALCONIA WINS CUP

Funds for an ambulance for Paeroa were considerably augmented on Saturday last by the donation of a percentage of the profits from the race meeting held by the Paeroa PicnicRacing Club. There was a good crowd present at the Paeroa racecourse in its ideal setting on Thames road and entries for the various events ran high. The track was rather heavy as there had been considerable rain overnight. The day began with heavy mists and occasional light showers and raincoats and galoshes were very lunch in evidence among the spectators, but by midday the sun was shining brightly and the weather continued fine for the rest of the afternoon.

Biggest event of the day was the President’? Handicap of six furlongs for horses that had not raced at a totalizator meeting during the last 12 months. The winner received £l4 and a cup which had been donated by Messrs Viv. Young and Tom Gregson, Mr G. Whale’s Valconia taking the honours. Came From Putaruru Mr Viv. Young, president, introduced the patron of the club, the mayor of Paeroa, Mr Edwin Edwards,

who presented Mr Whale with the cup. Mr Edwards remarked that he was pleased that Mr Whale had been sufficiently interested in the meeting to travel from as far away as Putaruru to attend it.

“A' you know.” said Mr FlwajJs, “ the proceeds of this meeting are to go to the St. John Ambulance Asso-

ciation, as they are anxious to purchase an ambulance for Paeroa. They have a shed for it already, ami an energetic and interested association. If we are able to provide an ambulance they will be able to extend the excellent service they are giving at the present time.” Mr Edwards called for three cheers for the winner of the president’s handicap, his horse and rider.

In reply, Mr Whale expressed his thanks but said that most of the credit was due to the rider and also to his daughter who had worked Valconia most of the time.

Mr Young thanked all those present for attending the meeting, the members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade who had been on duty, and all other helpers.
