MINISTER’S REPLY

“SPEAKING IN GENERAL” HAURAKI PLAINS DRAINAGE “ I wish to refer to your letter of February 18 in which you enquire what portion of the drainage system of the Hauraki Plains county I referred to when I mentioned some months ago that portion of the Hauraki Plains was sinking,” wrote the Minister of Lands, Hon. C. F. Skinner, to the April meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council.

“As you are no doubt aware, my reference to this matter was made when the drainage estimates were being discussed last session,” continued the letter. “ I was speaking in general terms only when I mentioned that some of the land in both the Hauraki county and the Rangitaiki drainage district was still subsiding. Although I did not mention or refer to any particular areas, I had in mind, so far as the Hauraki Plains are concerned, the subsidence which is occurring in the peat land on the western sidd of the Piako river.”
