ROADS SUFFER

EFFECT OF WET WEATHER OHINEMURI COUNTY MANiGAITI AREA NEGLECTED “ Since reporting at the last meeting the continued wet weather has had a very detrimental effect on roads generally, particularly at the Waihi end of the county,” stated the county engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, to the September meeting of the council. “ The Waihi crusher has worked continuously and kept the two trucks fully occupied, and most of the more affected lengths have been patched. It has been necessary at times to have the assistance of the Waikino men in this work. The output from the Thames road quarry this period has been limited owing to the fact of having to bore the whole face and take up the toe; also, the men have been required for various other works including road and water supply maintenance. “ Three concrete pipe culverts have ■been lengthened and two turning places have been constructed. Mangaiti Neglected “ All roads in the Mangaiti area are in a very neglected state owing chiefly to the usual -source of metal supplies not being in a position to fulfill requirements. With the exception of a few yards no maintenance metal has been placed on any of the roads during the whole of the winter, and it is estimated that an amount of 300 yarcls is required to only pick up the worst places. “ Othei’ roads at this end of. the county are also requiring a good deal of metal, 'but this can be done from the Thames road fluarry as the men can be spared to work the plant. “ Bridges generally have required attention hnd major work has been carried out on the Tirohia river bridge and Willows bridge, Waihi, it being necessary to close Leopold’s road for one week to do the latter. Paeroa Filters Cleaned “ All water supplies are working satisfactorily, but a good deal of maintenance has been necessary. . The filters of both reservoirs of the Paeroa supply have 'been cleaned. The screens of both filters will need replacing or repairing in the near future. “ Al] plant with the exception of the grader is in reasonably good working order. The power unit of the grader has been sent to Hamilton to the experts for overhaul and repairs; the grader itself has been Kerrick cleaned in readiness for painting,” the engineer concluded.
