PENINSULA NEWS GRADER RECALLED

“ MAKING ROAD WORSE ” HONEST ENDEAVOUR NEW ROAD SUGGESTED It was stated at the September meeting of the Coromandel County Council that the grader driver had sent word from Whangapoua that he was making the road worse than it was before and asked that he be withdrawn. Cr. F. H. Purdom said it had been an honest endeavour to hank up 1 the mud to let it dry out. The traffic was going through the scrub at the sides

of the road. The settlers were ■marooned, and he considered the extra expense was justified in’ putting in fascines at sides of road to allow the traffic to get through. It was resolved that the grader be brought back and put on other work. Cr. R. A. Simpson said the only thing to do was to push for the new road through from Tererenga to Mercury Bay. It would be of great benefit to Coromandel, he said; probably two or three weekly trips from Mercury Bay to Coromandel when there was an all-tide wharf. He urged the council to reconsider the matter.
