SAMUEL CUP
RETAINED BY PLAINS MATCH WITH PAEROA HOCKEY PLAYED AT NGATEA *' I After the heavy rain this week the field at Ngatea, although a 'bit heavy, , was in fail- condition for the Paeroa 1 and Hauraki ladies hockey match for the Samuel Cup. This cup which is ' played for annually was won again by. Hauraki, the final score being- Hauraki' 5, Paeroa nil. The game was very even for the first part of the first half, but Hauraki gradually managed to -break through the Paeroa defence. M. McLean opened the scoring with' a good shot. Shortly after this V. Fisher scored with a lucky shot. • The second half produced better hockey, both sides swinging the -ball about freely. Paeroa broke away several times -but their attacks. broke down when they reached Hauraki's circle. Hauraki full-backs were clearing- well and sending their forwards away again. M. Lawson took the ball well downfield before she passed to V. Fisher who scored with a nice shot. Paeroa conceded several penalty corners and from a scramble following one of these M. Olesen scored. Another good attack by the left wing saw V. Fishei- take a good pass and race through to score again. .Paeroa continued to attack hard but the Hauraki defence held and time was called with them still attacking. Conditions were not quite suitable for Paeroa’s short passing game and on the day a more individual forward game when nearing the- circle may have had better results. J. Heappey , at full-back played well for Paeroa - but -she was missed from her usual position of centre forward. For Hauraki V. Fisher .played a very good game as left inner and only wants a little more experience in thi® position. M. Leach also played well' . and was a tireless worker. The team® were entertained at afternoon tea in the Ngatea Hall. Mr . A. Flay on behalf of Mrs -M. McLean, president of the Hauraki Ladies’ Hockey Association, presented the Samuel Cup to the Hauraki captain, Mrs- M. Olesen. Umpires for the match were Messrs . H. Olesen and A. Flay.
