WHAT ARE THEY WORTH 1935 THREE-PENNY PIECE RUMOUR CURRENT IN PAEROA A rumour has been current in Paeroa for some weeks now regarding the value of 1935 threepenny pieces. People have been given to believe that the coins were in short supply and that collectors were paying from £5 to £9 for them. A large number of Paeroa residents have been inspecting three-penny pieces received in change with the hope of finding one dated 1935 but with little success. On Thursday a member of the Gazette staff eventually secured one of these coins and then began to investigate the rumour. It 'seems that the ■story originated in Hamilton. , He learned that a Paeroa resident has a sister working in the Hamilton post office, and the sister received an enquiry from a man asking where he could redeem a 1935 three-penny piece for £5. She was unable to give him any information on the matter, and the man went away disappointed. The woman told her Paeroa relative about the request. He mentioned it to a friend of his from Hastings. It happened that he was staying with a Paeroa businessman and his wife, and he passed the information on to them. The businessman’s curiosity was roused and he approached a local bank manager to learn whether the story was true. The bank manager passed the story on to his wife and she repeated it at the Paeroa Ladies’ Golf Club. Since then it has been cun-ent in the town," and many people have been asking one another whether a 1935 three-penny piece is worth £5. ' We still do not know. Do you?
