AFFORESTATION
LAND IN THE PENINSULA REHABILITATION ACQUISITION Recent acquisitions of land for servicemen by the Rehabilitation Department include some 20,055 acres at Whangapou, Coromandel, in the Auckland land district.
Of this only 4600 acres was ploughable land, says a statement by the department, and it would not be possible to use even all of that area for settlement purposes. It was proposed to use part of the block for an afforestation scheme.
The Under-Secretary for Lands, Mr R. G. McMorran, said the venture would be for combined forestry and farming. There was a possibility of settling a limited number of men and the stage had been reached where areas were being demarcated and the cost of the job estimated.
