BUSINESSMEN MEET CHAMBER OF COMMERCE QUESTION OF CLOSING HOURS A meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce was held in the Rotary Club rooms last Thursday. The president, Mr N. C. Davies, presided over the following:—Messrs' E. Kahn, D. Leach, C. Kenny, E. Edwards, B. A. Gwilliam, D. Roberts, M. Young, W. H. iCheale, W. E. Ward, J. Turnbull, W. Dean, W. 'Pirie, W. A. Clark, E. Thomas, P. H. Leigh, H. IHare, C. C. We'bb and the secretary, J. H. Bartlett Esq.

The resignation of Mr W. E. Westlake was accepted with regret. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Westlake for the good work done by him as an executive member. IMr W. A. Clark was appointed to ifill the vacancy on the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee caused by Mr Westlake’s resignation. The Services Commercial Centre advised that to date 3138 cases had been dealt with. Of these 9-06 had been placed in employment, 1034 in businesses ■«and advice and information had been given to 1197 .. Many male appointments had been made to positions previously filled by females. In clothing factories and boot factories there were now a number of male machinists. The chairman of the Paeroa Rehabilitation Committee, Mr Edwin Edwards, thanked the chamber for the interest shown in rehabilitation and assured members that the Advisory Committee would be called on if the loccasion arose when their services could be utilised. It was decided to support the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce in their efforts to have the Taneatua-Motu-hora gap of the East Coast railway Completed. Tow n Planning His Worship the Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, replied that Ml’ Cox of the ’Town Planning Department had visited Paeroa and addressed a meeting. The subject would be considered by the council at its next meeting. He could assure the chamber that the council was alive to the necessity of town planning and was desirous of doing something in this direction. Improved Street Lighting

Tn response to the chamber’s request for improved lighting in . the business area, Mr 'Edwards briefly explained the power position as it •affected the borough. At the request of the power board all street lighting had been cut to a minimum. It was not possible at the present time to get any increased allocation of power. Although neighbouring towns may have better street lighting Paeroa as yet had not had any cut-off period other towns had. As soon is extra power was available the borough would give immediate attention to the improved lighting of the town. Closing Hour On Friday

It was reported that some shops were now closing at 8. 1 30 instead of Q p.m. as agreed originally. It was decided that business people be asked to adhere to the original resolution. 'lt was considered that any further alteration of agreed hours might lead to confusion.
