MONEY STOLEN

YOUNG MAN BEFORE COURT PAYMENT RECEIVED ON ROUND Charged with failing to account for sums 1 of money collected from customers amounting to £2B/2/9 a young man whose name was supressed appeared before Mir W. H. Freeman S.M., in the Paeroa Court on Monday. Accused was represented by Mr Broadbent and pleaded guilty. Constable R. W. Beasley said that accused had been employed as a roundsman by the Hauraki Plains Meat Company and during his employment received payment from certain customers. Early in January the company found that customers had paid their accounts but the money had not been paid at the office at N'gatea. The trouble occurred between August 1945 and January 1946. The accused was a single man, not quite 26 years of age and he had not previously been in trouble. Mr Broadbent said accused had yielded to temptation but now realised 1 what he had done and was prepared to make full restitution. Constable Beasley said that accused had said the reason why he took the money was because his wages were small. The magistrate asked accused if he spent his money rushing round to dances, receiving a negative in reply. In entering a conviction with probation for T2 months the magistrate commented that too many youths were coming before the court for petty thieving. Accused was ordered to make restitution of the full amount in instalments to be fixed by the probation officer and to pay the costs 12/7d.
