OHINEMURI CLUB

SECOND AUTUMN MEETING ■SENSATION IN STEEPLES MAIN EVENT, ROYAL CHARTER The Ohinemuri Jockey Club were favoured with fine weather for their Second Autumn Meeting held on the Paeroa Racecourse on Saturday when a large crowd were treated to soma interesting racing with hard fought and exciting finishes. The track was heavy after rain during the week. The scratching pen was used lightly and big fields faced the starter in all . events making the task of the investor a difficult one. ■Under the guidance of the popular president, Mr Hugh Dent, and the -direction of the capable secretary, Mr J. J. Poland, the large programme which included three division races was run off in excellent time and speaks well for the efficiency and organisation of the .stewards. Steeples to New Battle There was something of a sensation in the Hauraki 'Plains Hack and Hunt- . .ers 'Steeplechase Handicap when inside four furlongs from home Etaro and Tangirere who had cleared out from the rest of the field took the wrong turning and ran off into the centre of the course. The rest of the field which was a considerable distance behind was then left to fight out a keen finish for Mr Viv. Young’s New Battle, owned and trained by him in Paeroa, to get up in the last few strides to take the decision from Tangatapai. An inquiry was held and after- hearing the explanation of the riders Ensor and Brady, the committee were of the opinion that the occurrence was purely accidental with no blame attached to either of the ' riders concerned. Other local h'orses to register successes were Mr Geo. Courtney’s General M'entieth which won the last race of the day, the Waikino Hack Handicap, to return a dividend a few pounds I short of a score. In the Turua Handicap Hurdles Mr J. H. Corbett’s Hunto secured a second to pay just under a score for a place. Mr Frank Handley’s Shveet Baffles was . beaten by a neck only in the Hikutaia Hack Handicap with Freezing Point, trained in Paeroa by Mr W. Skiffington, third Large Dividend Those who supported Master Dink which won the second division of the Hikutaia Hack Handicap received an excellent reward, the dividend exceeding half a hundred for a win and over a score for a place. ■ln the last race of the day Kenwyn fell, the rider J. Allen suffering a broken leg and severe abrasions. Tonight also fell but the boy was not injured. The presentation of the trophy presented by Mr S. Gudsell, of Auckland, to the winner of the Shaw Handicap was made by the president during the afternoon. He congratulated Mi- N. H. Hooker, the owner of the winner Royal Charter for the excellent performance of his horse and the jockey Messervy for the manner in which he had l handled his mount. Mr Hooker suitably replied. The totalisator handled £4'6,1’50 10s od. compared with £6'8,282 for the First Autumn Meeting held last March.
