APPOINTMENT BY COUNCIL MR M. C. BAKER OF AUCKLAND At Thursday night’s meeting of the council, Mr M. C. Baker, of Auckland, was appointed town clerk to the Paeroa Borough Council in place of Mr R. S. Nicol who has resigned. Twenty-two applications for the position were received and these were considered at a special meeting of the council on Tuesday night, three being selected for interview on Thursday night when Mr Baker was appointed. He will commence his duties one month as from Thursday. Mr Baker who is a returned soldier of this war is 33 years of age and at present is assistant clerk of the Newmarket Borough Council. He is married with one child. Mr Baker was born at Maketu, Bay of Plenty. He was educated at Thames High School. On leaving school he joined the staff of the Thames Borough Council where he was employed from 1933 to 1937. In May, 1937, he was appointed assistant town clerk to the Newmarket Borough Council, a position he has held since, with the exception of 4} years’ military service. From 1935 to 1939 he was sprint champion of the Waikato and Thames Valley; three years sprint champion Auckland province and in 1938 quarter mile National Champion. He represented Thames senior rugby, cricket, hockey and while overseas played in the New Zealand rugby trials. While in Italy in May, 1945, he won the 440 yards British Army Championship and in Egypt a few months later he won the 100 yards and 440 yards Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force Championship.
