DOCTOR WANTED

REQUEST FROM THE BAY ’CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DAILY MAIL SUGGESTED A meeting of the Mercury Bay Chamber of Commerce was held in the Whitianga Hall recently. There was a good' attendance of members and several items of general interest were brought up for discussion. A reply from the Medical Officer of Health concerning an application for a resident doctor at the Mercury Bay Hospital, provoked discussion. It was pointed out that since a resident doctor was stationed here previously, the population had increased; by approximately three hundred', and although the population was now about eight hundred it was served only once weekly by the doctor from the Coromandel Hospital. 'People were reluctant to request the doctor to travel from Coromandel unless it was a case of extreme emergency. It was decided to inform the Medical Officer of Health of the increase in population and request that a resident doctor be appointed. Wandering Stock The question of wandering stock was again brought up for discussion and it was decided to bring the matter before the county, and those people who were known to be offenders. The damage caused to the Phoenix Palms on the waterfront caused particular concern. A letter was received from, the Kawakawa Chamber of Commerce requesting support for a scheme whereby outlying districts would have air transport by flying, boat to and from Auckland. It was decided to write to the Kawakawa Chamber of Commerce supporting their suggestion for air services and pledging this chamber’s assistance in furthering the general scheme. It was unanimously approved that a letter be written to the chief Postmaster at Thames requesting that now here was a daily bus service a daily mail service should be provided. Bad State of Roads There was a long discussion on the bad state of the roads and it was eventually moved that a letter be written 1 to the Coromandel County Council directing their attenion to the sate of disrepair of roads in the district, and particularly to the main road as far as the five mile peg and the other side of the township along Buffalo Beach. A member directed the chamber’s attention to the general untidiness of the township caused through long grass on the roadside and the unkept appearance of vacant sections. It was decided 1 unanimously that something would have to be done in the near future to instill civic pride in the community. A vote of confidence was passed in the attitude Mr A. Watkins, the riding member had taken, in the discussions at the last meeting 1 of the Coromandel County Council, on the matter of street lighting.

No more business the meeting was closed.
