ONLY £3191

OHINEMURI PUBLIC DEBT COUNTY’® SOUND POSITION That the actual public debt of the Ohinemuri County Council as at March 31, 1946, was merely £3191/13/4 was disclosed by the county clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, to the April meeting of the council.

In his report on the workings of the past year the county clerk referred to the public debt as follows:—

“The total public debt as shown in the balance sheet is £8639/10/6 but from this can be deducted sinking funds accrued at March 31, 1946, totalling £llO6/16/9, also the difference between the £2087/10/0 showing under the Mangaiti Bridge Loan and the total of interest yet to be paid on the loan amounting to £l7l/11/4 which, when paid will extinguish the loan, marking a deductable balance of £1915/18/8. This makes a total of sinking funds and credits of £3022/15/5— ’giving a net public debt at March 31, 1946, of £5616/15/1 a decrease for the year of £BO2/1/3.

“The rural housing advances of course are covered by security and the amounts are actually owing by settlers: the item therefore is only nominally portion of the public debt and if it were deducted the public debt would stand at £3191/13/4.”
