WORK IN COUNTY

HIGHWAYS AND BRIDGES REPORT 'BY ENGINEER POSITION IN OHINEMURI The county engineer, Mr L. B. Shaw, reported to the April meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council in regard to roads and bridges as follows: — Main Highways “Hikutaia-Netherton Highway: This length of-highway is in good running order. “Boundary Bridge: The reconditioning of this bridge, with the exception of the painting of the handrails and general tidying up, has been completed. “Hubbard’s Road: The sealing of this highway has not been possible as chip is still not available, but the whole length generally is in good order. Timber Under Road “Roads at this end of the county are in reasonably good order. Mill road being the exception, but this length is being attended to. “It will be necessary in the near future to remove the timber from two sections of the Rotokohu road. This is a re-occurring job which usually becomes necessary after a continued dry spell of weather, a recent count of the stumps showing above the metalled surface being 27. The removal of stumps will be put in hand when labour is available. Fire Causes Damage “The lengthening of culvert pipes on various roads was continued, and a further 11 culverts have been lengthened. A fire started by a settler on Robinson’s road has been the cause of considerable damage to the

road. A number of men had to be employed to extinguish the fire, it being necessary to dig under the formation to get water in. The water main, being handy, was cut for this purpose. Some filling has been replaced and other places dangerous to traffic have been railed off in the meantime.

“At the Waihi end of the county roads generally are in fair condition. The quarry is again operating and all roads are receiving attention. The additional culverts on Woodlands road have been installed, and all others, wherever damaged, have been repaired. Atogether nine new culverts were placed. Bridges at this end of the county have required a good deal of attention.
