EASTER SPORTS

VERY SUCCESSFUL DAY

COROMANDEJL FUNCTION OVER 800 PEOPLE ATTEND 'On 'Efaster Saturday the Coromandel .branch of the R;S.A. held a sports meeting in order to raise funds for club rooms. The day turned out to be fine and hot, and a record crowd of over 800 passed through the gates. A large 'programme of events was ,carried out, all of which provided novel and exciting entertainment and included chopping events, hurdles, steeplechase, stockmen’s events, races, steer riding and a sheep dog demonstration. (Donkeys were there to give rides to the younger folk. The Paeroa Municipal Band under the baton of 'Bandmaster E. Beilby, entertained everyone throughout the day, a feat which greatly assisted the holiday spirit and provided a musical treat for everyone. •Refreshments in the way of light lunch, ice cream and soft drinks and a huge Kopa Maori were provided and proved a very welcome asset to the day’s outing. The steer riding proved exciting and. it will be readily acknowledged by all, that the riders were game to tackle the trips on the backs of the bucking animals. The,'Kopa Maori was a great success, and was one o'f the best paying propositions through the day. 'The entries for the chopping events were not very many, but they were watched closely, and excitedly by a very large number of spectators, whose barracking showed how popular these chops are. The horse events were good, and after a lapse of many years of this kind of sports meeting, everyone watched with keen interest. Many visitors were astounded at the cleverness of the sheep dog in giving the demonstrations—a feat of infinite patience on the part of the owner and sagacity on the part of the dbg. Taking the day’s activities as a whole, it was a well worth while undertaking and everyone was pleased and satisfied with the day’s sport. (Single 'Ladies Race.—M. Atherton 1, ;D. Inglis i2.
