GRAVEL FROM RIVER

WAIWAWA RIVER SUPPLY DECISION OF THE COUNTY Reports, it was stated at the November meeting of the Coromandel County Council, had reached Coromandel that gravel was being taken from the Waiwawa river without authority. ' . The county foreman, Mr W. Beech, said he had been placed at a disadvantage by private people taking gravel and leaving him what was left. He gave’ it as his opinion that the bed would be slow building up. The Marine Department, having granted the council permission to use this gravel for roads, steps must be taken to stop private people from helping themselves.

Cr. A. J. Denize said his sympathy was with the public. What were they to do? Either the council must supply the metal to the farmers or make the gravel available to the settlers. Cr. E. J. Simpson asked where did the settlers get the gravel before the county made the road into it?

Cr. lE. Deeible said that until the quarries were working the gravel must .fie conserved for roads.

It was finally resolved that author-' ity be given to ask Mr Gilliver to inspect the bed of gravel and also that’" the pplice be contacted ;and ' advised J regarding the taking .of gravel without authority, pointing out that''the council had takpn action- regarding metal deposits and asking f6r assistance to tz}ke action against'those who take the shingle without* authority.'
