OPPOSITION OUTSTAYED

new battle takes steeples

The principal'event, the Poland Cup, was won by Betterman, owned and trained! in Paeroa by Mr Harvey EVans andi although it was one of the outsiders of a field of nine it was accorded a great ovation on returning to the birdcage. At the six-furlong peg Betterman was lying eighth but when shaken up smartly ran through the field to enter the straight second behind Hunting Lock who had tried to lead from end to end; As they straightened up, Air Port moved up wide out on the track and with Betterman had a great set to to the post, Mr Harvey 'Evans’ horse getting the decision by a neck with Hunting Loch a neck further back third* The Maramarua 'Steeples was won by New Battle, also owned and trained in Paeroa 'by Mr V. Young. New Battle was, very capably ridden by Mr 0. Young who took all the short cuts and many lengths on the turns to bring his horse home a winner by a head from Sporting Nation. Tt r o Pals finished third but as he ran off at the second double in the final round he was disqualified and Lockheed' was given the minor placing. Stockley, the rider of ’Two Pals was suspended for a month. New Battle’s win was particularly popular, being the win favourite on the machine. At the conclusion of the race his owner distributed each to all th professionals who took part in the event.
