CAREFUL WITNESS
LICENSING AUTHORITY SITS NO’ HASTY ANSWERS. GIVEN Though the sittings of the Licensing Authority are usually of little interest to others than the applicants for licences, the sitting at Paeroa recently was enlivened when a wellknown operator was being cross-exam-ined. Counsel was firing rapid questions at the witness, but he was not to be trapped into giving a hasty answer. “You put the question to me so that I can give you the answer I want to and I will reply,” said 1 he amidst laughter from all present. The same witness, when asked for the population of Waihi Beach replied “I don’t know how many people live there but there are 1i35 votes at the beach.” Those who followed the election campaign for the last borpugfi elections at Waihi could appreciate the suppressed ripple of mirth which ran round the court.
