TOTE RECORD

LARGE CROWD AT PAEROA THAMES JOCKEY CLUB ERNADA WINS THE PRESIDENT’S A tbtalisator record for the Paeroa course was established at the Thames Jockiey Club’s Spring Meeting held on Saturday when the machine handled £67,167 compared with £45,741 10s for the same day last year, an increase of £21,425 10s. The total handled is approximately £5OOO above the previous record for the course. The weather was dull but fine while the attendance was one of the largest ever seen. The track was holding and cutting out after heavy rain during the week.

The principal event, the (President’s Handicap was won by Ernada who beat the favourite Abbey Fox comfortably in the run home. Tiger Tan won the sprint, the Parawai Handicap fairly easily from Lord Dink.

The Maramarua Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase was won by New Battle which had been capably ridden by Mr O. Young to come home five lengths in front of the field' after having been nicely placed throughout the- race. New Battle is owned and trained in Paeroa by Mr V. Young.

Other successful local’ horses were Mr F. Handley’s Sweet Baffles, second in the third division of the Second Trial Plate, Mr Harvey Evans’ Skyette third in the Maramarua Steeples, Messrs E. C. Foots and E. A. Kneebone’s Lord Dink and Mr G. Courtney’s Gaymeer, second and third respectively in the 'Parawai Handicap and Messrs G. Forsyth and T. Smith’s Take-a-Lot third in the first division of the first trial plate.

Punters had a bad day, as there were several surprises — Whitford Queen, better than 20-to-l shot, coming home, iSir Leon, in the Stewards’ paid a substantial double-figure dividlend, and Hazara was at better than 14-to-l in the 'Second Trial Plate, while New Battle paid more than £25. In the Maramarua Steeples Winning Tray crashed at the first fence and broke his neck. Detailed results are:— HIKUTAIA HANDICAP HURDLES, Of £275; 14 miles.
