SAFE IN GERMANY
♦ SGT. E. COE OF WAITAKARURU WITH AMERICAN FORCES Advice from her husband', Sergeant E. Coe, that he is safe in Germany with the American forces has been received by Mrs E. Coe, of Waitakaruru.
Trooper E. Coe left New Zealand with the second echelon in May, 1940, and went to England. He was taken prisoner early in the Greek campaign and was missing for six weeks before Mrs Coe was advised of his whereabouts. Letters arrived regularly until one week prior to V.E. Day. Then came an anxious time of waiting. On August 23 Mrs 'Coe received a letter from her husband, now Sgt. Coe, from Germany saying that he was with the American forces, but he gave no explanation of the reason he was with them either in this or a further letter received since. These letters have been sent to the Minister of Defence who has cabled for news, and it is hoped that this will be soon forthcoming.
