THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY “Public Service.” FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1945. ROAD SAFETY

With the expected arriva shortly of large/ numbers o: motor vehicles from overseas and a relaxation in the petro restrictions, may be antici pated that there will shortly b< a return to more normal traffii on city roads and country high, ways. Once more attention wil need to be given to a thorougl training in “road consciousness’ with the object of preventing t high frequency of motoring acci dents. This matter is bein« given serious consideration over seas, where many countries, ant particularly the United States have embarked afresh on roat safety campaigns. Fears have been expressed al most universally that the free] distribution of petrol will firing on to the roads large numbers of cars which are in a badly de teriorated condition. There has been an almost complete pension of motor-car manufac ture for nearly five years l ant consequently many of those vehicles which have been usee during the war years are beyonc the pre-war “scrapping” age, anc have been k-ept on the roads onlj by judicious and constant mechanical adjustment. The tyre shortage has created a probleir in itself, and jt is feared that accidents may result from' the more frequent use of vehicles shod with ibadly worn-out tyres A period of restricted motoi vehicle use has naturally tended to make both drivers and pedestrians less cautious, and re-edu-cation in road care will be a first essential. This problem will apply most noticeably to the younger members of the community, many of whom have reached ’teen-ages during the war and have not been encouraged in that degree of road care which characterised pre-war days. Motorists’ organisations are at present appealing to their members for the renewed exercise of care, particularly where old cars are being used. The fullest co-operation will now be needed between the educational authorities and the motoring world to put into effect a safety campaign among children.
