THAMES CITIZENS’ BAND FUNDS FOR REST ROOM ITEMS GIVEN AT HOSPITAL

The Thames Citizens’ Band visited Mercury Bay recently, giving a concert in aid of funds for the rest room. The visit was an unqualified success, both from the point of view of the band and the people of Mercury Bay. Members of the band were the guests of the residents, who billeted them at their homes. All expenses were p id by the residents. The queen carnival will benefit to the extent of over £3o' raised at the concert.

On arrival, the band was met by a large gathering, and some minutes later played down the main street. Well before the concert was- timed to start, the hall was packed, and when it did begin many were standing. Popular Items

Popular items on the programme, and greeted with loud applause, were the conjuring by Mr E. Whitehead, a musical comedy sketch by the band, and an exhibition of swinging the mace by Mr T. K. Verran, the drummajor.

Other items were “The March % Of The Herald,” “Musical Memories,” “Spirit of Youth,” M'aoriland selections, Gene Autry selections, and the “Victoria March,” all by the Band, an exhibition on the drums by Messrs G. Roberts and A. Campbell, a euphonium solo by Mr Noel Underwood, and a cornet duet by Messrs T. and B. O’Leary.

At the conclusion of the concert a dance followed, at which the music was played by Dan Fisher and his Boys. On Sunday, the band played at the hospital and proved very popular there. In the afternoon it played in the street and gave an exhibition march. The band left some time later and was farewelled by a very large gathering. The visit proved so popular that the residents have invited the band to visit Mercury Bay at Easter.

Mr A. E. Sutcliffe was the conductor and Mr A. Campbell sergeant.
