THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, SEIPT. 19, 1945 NO FARMER INCLUDED

Although, no doubt, the Government will be suitably represented at Paris by Mr Webb, ho farmer has been included in the New Zealand delegation to attend the conference of the Fooc and Agricultural Organisation meeting in Canada next month. The leader will be New Zealand’s High Commissioner in Canada, the Hon. D. Wilson, who has devoted his life to trade unionism and political organisation. A more apparent misfit can scarcely be .imagined. Fortunately for the Dominion he will be joined by two able collaborators in Mr Fawcett and Mr Pottinger. Their approach to the conference problems must, however, be made from the official and departmental points of view. At least one direct representative of the farmers, a practical man, should have been added to the delegation. Such a man as Mr' Mulholland, for instance, would have materially strengthened New Zealand’s team in experience and first-hand knowledge. More than that, he coulc. upon his return have engaged the interests of farmers' in the aims of an important organisation about which too little has been heard here. Its success can contribute more to New Zealand’s future prosperity than almost any other Internationa agency.

The contrast between the delegation for Canada and that setting out for Paris is glaring. The conference in Paris of the International Labour Organisation, on the other hand, will be gracec by a delegation of five, headed by the Minister,- Mr Webb, supported by his departmental chief and adviser, and reinforcec by direct representatives of the workers and employers. All these at the country’s expense. The consideration shown to the workers and the neglect visited on the farmers exposes nakedly the Government’s sense of values. There may, of course, be a majority who will wonder whether Mr Webb has all the attributes requisite to equip an emissary of this country in a city so much the centre of Western art and culture as Paris.
