SIX CHARGES

OFFENCES IN PAEROA YOUNG MAN’S RECORD “You have had two chances and I am going to give you a third, but it won’t be better than the ones you have already had,” said Mr Justice Blair when Henry Edmund Lord, aged 21, a labourer (Mr Trimmer), appeared before him for sentence. Lord was on remand from Paeroa on two charges of breaking and entering a shop with intent to commit a crime, three charges of breaking and entering and theft, and one charge of theft.

(Prisoner was a member of a large family, and his parents' had separated when he was a child, said Mr Trimmer. His mother had been forced to find employment and as* a result he had not had a proper home. He had been before the Court on a number of previous occasions, and had served terms of two years and one year m Borstal institutions. There was evidence that he responded' to proper treatment and had been well behaved when on a farm.

Mr Trimmer asked that prisoner be granted probation, a term being that he lived on a farm, or that he be sentenced to reformative detention, a condition being that he be released by the Prisons’ Board and' sent to a suitable farm.

He could not tie the hands of the Prisons Board by approving such conditions, said his Honour. In his opinion prisoner had not shown that he responded'to proper treatment.

Lord was sentenced to reformative detention for two years on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent.
