Alley dropped a field -.-goal. Mr A. Ripley was the referee. GOOD DISPLAY BY PONSONBY PAEROA DEFEATED 29 TO NINE Before a very large crowd at the Paeroa Domain on Saturday the Ponsonby team proved too good for the local boys. They threw the ball about in grand style and their team 1 work and understanding of one another’s play being a treat to watch. Once they had gained possession the backs rarely kicked, and in several movements one of the backs handled the ball two or three times. EVen when defending they were not afraid to start a passing rush and once they turned defence into attack right on their own goal line, the movement culminating in a try for Ponsonby. P. Tetzlaff at half-back did not get into his stride until the second half when he gave a great exhibition. Glen Hook at first five-eighths was at his best and was ably supported by P. McKay at second. All the backs were dangerous every time they got the ball. In contrast Paeroa backs though playing good individual games just lacked the combination of their opponents. Short, Chaney and Harrison got through a lot of hard work. The 'Ponsony forwards were much heavier than Paeroa but did not have matters all their own way. In a good pack Te Puni was the pick of Ponsonby and Oilington and Neil the best of Paeroa. The teams lined out as follows: — Ponsonby (blue and black). —(Fullback, Cameron; three-quarters, Stewart, Menzies, Hamill; five-eighths, Hook, McKay; half, Tetzlaff; forwards, Gardner, Johnson, Mcßae, D. Johnston, Boyd, Burke, Te Puni, Stewart. Paeroa (green)’.—'Fullback, Speechlay; three-quarters, Harris, Vinnicombe, Vause; five-eighths, Chaney, Short; half, Harrison; forwards, Murphy, Ollington, Gerrand, Smith, Lock, Fraser, Laverick, G. Neil . For Ponsonby tries were scored by Hamill 1(2), Johnson, McKay (2), Tetzlaff and Te Puni. Menzies converted' four tries. For Paeroa Vause and Ollington scored' tries and Slpeechlay kicked a penalty goal. The half-time score was Ponsonby 8, Paeroa 6 and the final score Ponsonby 29,” Paeroa 9Mr H. T. Grant was the referee. VISITORS ENTERTAINED DINNER FOR THE TEAMS After the game the Ponsonby team j

was entertained to dinner at the Criterion Hotel by the ‘Paeroa Union.

Tributes to the team both on and off the field were paid by the president, Mr D. G. McMillan. He was sure that everybody, both spectators and players l , had' enjoyed the game. The (Ponsonby l team had turned on the type of football which was seldom seen in Paeroa and he felt sure that the Paeroa team would benefit from the display. He hoped that this would be the forerunner of many visits from the Ponsonby club. In reply, Mr Upton, manager of the Ponsonby team expressed his thanks for the treatment accorded, the team and paid a tribute to the excellent arrangements. The toasts of the teams were in the hands of iP. Tetzlaff of Ponsonby and F. Chaney of Paeroa. The following toasts were also honoured:—'"The 'Referees,” Mr G. Masters, reply, Mr H. T.
