BAY INSTITUTE MEETS GOOD DISPLAY OF FLOWERS HUSBANDS’ EVENING ARRANGED There was a good attendance at the August meeting of the (Mercury Bay Women’s Institute and 'keen, regret was felt at the absence of Miss Paul who was unable to attend on account of illness. Mrs Sharpies, president, capably arranged an emergency programme to fill in the allotted time arranged for Miss Paul to address the meeting. The usual business was attended to and arrangements were finalised for the September flower show. A large number of daffodils have bloomed and a lovely vase by Mrs K. White gained first place in the flower competition during the afternoon. The blooms were huge and perfect ones and of a good variety. Mrs W. Harsant gained second place with hyacinths and Mrs Russell third place. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs White (anemone) 1, Mrs* McKenzie (daffo-

dil) 2 and Mrs Bronlund (daffodil) 3. It was arranged for members to attend the Thames birthday. Mrs Russell read a story of the life of Madame Chiang Kaishek in the “Golden Thread” series. A novel white china tea-pot was presented to iMrs Harsant by. the president with the members’ good wishes on the occasion of her recent marriage. Mrs 'Sharpies secured first place for the darned sock and Mrs Russell second. The best cake, made with honey instead of sugar, was that of Mrs H. McKenzie with second place to Mrs Hallam. Mrs Russell was third. The roll call, “A Motto,” was fairly well responded to. An evening for members’ husbands was arranged and the programme discussed. Mrs McKenzie secured good prices for the “bring and buy” stall. Mrs Harsant read an amusing story “Barbara Commits a Crime” from the “Barbara” series. A lovely afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, (Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Comer and Mrs Ralph. (Most of the lovely flower section entries were sent to members who were patients at the hospital.

The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
