KUAOTUNU WIN

WHITIANGA BEATEN 13 TO 3 FAST, INTERESTING GAME UNITED WIN BRYCE CUP (Playing in perfect football weather before a good attendance, Kuaotunu defeated Whitianga, theii- old rivals, by 13 points to three in a rugby game that was both fast and open. The first half was very open with the lighter Kuaotunu vanguard fighting hard to check the rushes of the heavier Whitianga pack. Whitianga were securing a two to one ratio from set scrums, but the Kuaotunu inside backs were not allowing their opposition any room to work in and halftime came with no score.

.After the change-over Kuaotunu swept through, to their opponents’ twenty-five where Whitianga’s - fullback, Olsen, whose display was safe, drove them back to helf-way with a good kick. However, Kuaotunu were not to be denied and from a set scrum on half-way the 'ball travelled along the back line to (P. Winiata who took the gap, kicked over’ the fullback’s head and racing on gathered the ball in to touch down between the posts. Chapman converted'.

Epiha who broke through and with a powerful run scored a good try beside the posts. Chapman converted.. Kuatounu 13, Whitianga 3. The game ended; shortly afterwards. Mr ,S. Tucker was the referee. For Whitianga F. Olsen played well at fullback while C. Hare and D. Lowe were prominent forwards' for Kuaotunu, the pack although lighter, played well while P. Simpson, N. Winiata and J. Epiha were prominent among the backs.

This concludes the championship for the Bryce Cup and United are now the holders, points being as follows: — United 9, Kuaotunu 7, Tairua and Whitianga 4.

COROMANDEL BEATEN THAMES FISHERMEN’S TEAM On Saturday, July 7, the Thames Fishermen’s football team played Coromandel on the Coromandel Domain when the former won by 12 to nine. Mr “Scotty” Davis was the referee, and a good game was reported. ‘ In the evening a dance was held in St. George’s Hall when the visiting team enjoyed a pleasant evening’s entertainment, leaving for home in the early hours.
